2020 The Trebuchet Shiraz-Viognier

But this beauty from South Africa’s famed Gabb family and their acclaimed Journey’s End estate takes it one step further. Named for the MAMMOTH—and fully functional—trebuchet that proudly sits on the estate’s front lawn, this Trebuchet is a blend of Shiraz and…Viognier. Yep, winemakers have long been adding a touch of voluptuous, floral/apricot-y (white) Viognier to their (red) Syrah for centuries. It adds a lovely perfume and texture to the wine—get some and you’ll see! Look for exuberant aromas of ripe cherry and red berries with a subtle hints of spice and white blossoms. On the palate, there’s juicy-fleshy black plum notes, framed by firm tannins and a long, lush finish. Roasted pork, fresh gnocchi, leg of lamb with apricot chutney, chargrilled burgers, and even pizza delivery—all perfect matches.
