Añoso 8 is the aged flagship of 9north's Panamanian lineup — a blend of rums aged 8 to 12 years, matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in casks that previously held Oloroso sherry and Madeira (with some bourbon-finish components in the mix as well), bottled at a serious 98 proof (49% ABV) with no sweeteners or flavoring added. The rum comes from sugarcane grown in the volcanic soil of Panama's Herrera Province, distilled at the historic Las Cabras distillery (PILSA), established 1924. Wine Enthusiast's blind tasting scored it an impressive 92 points, describing a honey hue with mild vanilla aroma, a palate of marzipan and crème brûlée, and a long finish warmed by lively clove and a cinnamon red-hot tingle — recommending a splash of water to temper the heat. Other tasters pick up molasses, date, dried fruit, leather, toasted caramel, and oak spice, with delicate tropical fruit underneath and a savory, spice-driven close.
