Cardhu 16 Year Old Special Releases 2022 is the annual limited edition from Cardhu Distillery — a Speyside single malt themed ‘The Hidden Paradise of Black Rock’ (a nod to the original name of the distillery: Carn Dubh, or ‘the black rock’), finished in ex-Jamaican rum casks for a pleasant dose of funky tropical sweetness added to the characteristic Cardhu Speyside character.

Cardhu Distillery in Knockando, Speyside was founded in 1824 and is one of the founding members of Diageo’s Classic Malts programme. The original name Carn Dubh (‘black rock’ in Gaelic) references the rocky outcrop at the distillery’s location. The 2022 Special Release’s ex-Jamaican rum cask finishing adds the characteristic funky, estery, and tropical sweetness of Jamaican rum production — Jamaican rum is known for its particularly high ester content and distinctive ‘hogo’ character from the slow fermentation process. Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Jamaican rum casks distinctive?

Jamaican rum is known for its particularly high ester content from the slow fermentation and pot still distillation process — the characteristic funky, overripe fruit, and estery tropical character (‘hogo’) that distinguishes Jamaican rum from lighter Caribbean styles. Ex-Jamaican rum casks carry this distinctive funky tropical character into whisky maturation. Order online with fast shipping.
