Colonel E.H. Taylor Old Fashioned Sour Mash is a limited Buffalo Trace release honoring Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr.'s original late-1800s technique — allowing the mash to sour naturally for days before distillation to develop fuller body and deeper character — distilled in 2002, Bottled in Bond at 100 proof, and presented in the Taylor collection's signature cylindrical tube with hand-dipped wax seal.
E.H. Taylor Jr. is known as the Father of the Modern Bourbon Industry — as a banker he helped finance Kentucky distilleries, purchased the O.F.C. Distillery in 1869, and lobbied for the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, which established legal quality standards for bourbon that remain in effect. The Old Fashioned Sour Mash expression specifically replicates one of his most distinctive techniques: extended natural souring of the grain mash before distillation, a method that produces a richer, fuller body than the standard sour mash process used industry-wide.
