Description
Combier Roi Rene Rouge Cherry Liqueur is a French cherry liqueur from Saumur with bright fruit, gentle sweetness, and a natural ruby color. Made from a blend of guignes, morello, and black cherries, it delivers ripe cherry aroma, light tartness, subtle spice, and a clean fruit-driven finish. Bottled at 25% ABV, it is especially useful in Singapore Slings, Blood and Sands, sours, and sparkling cherry cocktails.
Producer
Combier was founded in Saumur, France in 1834 by Jean-Baptiste Combier and his wife, who first made liqueurs behind their confectionery shop. Roi Rene Rouge is based on a much older cherry liqueur recipe attributed to Reverend Mother Gautron of the Benedictine Abbey of Saumur. Combier states that the recipe and production method have not been modified from that original 17th century formula.
Cocktail Suggestions
Combier Roi Rene Rouge Cherry Liqueur is a strong fit for a Singapore Sling with gin, citrus, pineapple, Benedictine, bitters, and soda. Its cherry fruit gives the cocktail color and sweetness, while the morello and guignes cherry character keeps the drink brighter and less syrupy than a basic cherry cordial.
It also works well in a Blood and Sand with Scotch whisky, sweet vermouth, and fresh orange juice. Combier’s cherry profile connects the orange and vermouth while adding enough fruit depth to balance the whisky’s malt, oak, and smoke.
