In November 1996, a fire destroyed Heaven Hill's main distillery complex in Bardstown, Kentucky — the largest distillery fire in American bourbon history. It consumed over 90,000 barrels and seven warehouses. Some barrels survived. The 41 barrels used in this release were among that surviving stock — distilled in 1989–1990, before the fire, at the Old Heaven Hills Springs Distillery, matured for 27 years and released as a single one-time bottling when the team determined the barrels had reached peak condition.

At 27 years, these barrels represent some of the oldest American bourbon ever commercially released.
