Lunazul Blanco is produced at the Tierra de Agaves Distillery — NOM 1513 — in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, an estate with a family tradition of agave cultivation extending back over 250 years to 1758. The distillery was founded in 2002 by Francisco Beckmann, a former co-owner of Jose Cuervo, with the express purpose of producing small-batch tequila on a single, vertically integrated estate. The blue Weber agave used in production is estate-grown and hand-harvested on the Beckmann property, situated in the valley of Tequila at the foot of the Tequila Volcano, where volcanic soils and a semi-arid climate shape the character of the agave grown within them.
The piñas are slow-roasted before being double distilled in copper pot stills — alembic-style stills with historical roots in Cognac production — a vessel choice that preserves the agave's natural aromatic compounds with particular delicacy. As a blanco, the spirit is bottled unaged following distillation, allowing the full character of the estate-grown agave and the distillation process to present without the mediation of wood. The estate-grown, distilled, and bottled designation reflects the distillery's commitment to controlling every stage of production within a single property.
The nose is fresh and fruit-forward, with tropical fruit, green apple, and a salted citrus quality that is characteristic of valley-grown agave. The palate is semi-viscous with cooked agave, ripe fruit, and crisp citrus building through a peppery mid-palate. The finish is balanced and extended, closing on citrus peel, white pepper, and a lingering herbaceous note that reflects the unaged agave character in its most direct form.
