History
Michter's "Celebration" Sour Mash Batch 2 is created with tradition in mind at the Michter's Distillery in Kentucky, Louisville. It was crafted in pursuit of Michter’s goal of making the greatest American whiskey. In the 18th century, a Swiss Mennonite farmer named John Shenk settled his family near Pennsylvania's Blue Mountain Valley. After a few years of hard work, Shenk harvested more grains than he could sell at the local market. Consequently, he purchased a still and began distilling excess grains into whiskey, founding Michter's, the United States' first distilling company. Over the years, they experimented with various barrel finishes, resulting in a barrel strength bourbon that is aged in a second custom barrel made from 24-month air-dried wood and toasted to enhance its flavor. Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey is crafted from a mash of fresh rye grains, which are sheared for better flavor absorption during fermentation. After fermentation, the grains are distilled through a copper-pot still and matured in charred American oak barrels. The barrels rest in a heat-cycled warehouse, allowing the wood to expand and contract, creating a rich synergy between the whiskey and wood, imparting notes of marmalade and light caramel.
