Patrón Añejo is the most aged expression in the core Patrón lineup — the same 100% Blue Weber agave, tahona and roller mill blend, and double copper pot still distillation as Patrón Silver and Reposado, then matured a minimum of 12 months in small new oak barrels that develop a rich amber color, vanilla, honey, and smoky caramel character that the extended small-barrel aging specifically produces.
Añejo (meaning 'aged' in Spanish) requires a minimum of one year in oak, and Patrón's small barrel program is key to the expression's character. Smaller barrels have a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio than standard size barrels, meaning the spirit contacts proportionally more wood per liter — accelerating the extraction of vanilla, caramel, and oak compounds compared to full-size barrel aging. The result is a tequila with noticeably more oak depth and richness than the Reposado, while maintaining the fundamental roasted agave and fruit character of the Patrón production style. Master Distiller Francisco Alcaraz oversees the barrel selection and aging determination.

Small barrels have a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio than standard barrels, meaning the tequila contacts proportionally more wood per liter. This accelerates extraction of vanilla, caramel, and oak compounds, producing more oak depth in 12 months than standard barrel aging would achieve in the same time. It allows Patrón Añejo to reach the rich, caramel-forward character that defines the expression within the legal minimum añejo aging window.
