W.L. Weller Full Proof is a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon from Buffalo Trace, bottled at 114 proof — the same proof the spirit was when it entered the barrel — and non-chill filtered to preserve the naturally occurring oils and flavors developed during distillation and aging.

William Larue Weller developed his original bourbon recipe using wheat rather than rye as the secondary grain, the choice that made wheated bourbon legendary and that still defines the Weller line today. Full Proof honors that legacy at barrel-entry strength: bottling at 114 proof with no dilution preserves the full concentration of flavor, while skipping chill filtration keeps the residual oils intact (which can make the bourbon appear cloudy at cold temperatures — a sign the character has been left untouched). The result balances a rich, full mouthfeel against robust vanilla and oak.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak with the soft sweetness of the wheated mashbill
  • Palate: Rich and full — vanilla, oak, and brown sugar carried by the 114-proof strength
  • Finish: Long and warming with lingering wood and sweet grain

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does “full proof” mean here? The bourbon is bottled at 114 proof — the exact proof at which it entered the barrel — with no water added before bottling, preserving the full concentration of flavor.
  • Why might it look cloudy when cold? It is non-chill filtered, so the naturally occurring oils remain in the spirit and can cause a slight haze at cold temperatures. This is normal and reflects the untouched character.
  • What makes Weller a wheated bourbon? The recipe uses wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain, producing a softer, sweeter character than rye-recipe bourbons.
