Basil Hayden Sr. was a Maryland Catholic who, in 1785, led a group of twenty-five Catholic families from Maryland into what is now Nelson County, Kentucky (near Bardstown).
After the American Revolution in 1792, Basil Hayden Sr developed the high-rye mash used to create the family’s first bourbon. Later, Hayden’s grandson, Raymond B. Hayden, founded a distillery in Nelson County and named his label “Old Grand-Dad” in honour of his grandfather.
In 1992, Beam Suntory began producing the Basil Hayden Small Batch line using the original recipe.
Nose: The nose brings doses of summer fruits and oak.
Palate: Oak and sweet vanilla form the entirety of the palate. You might expect more complexity from a 10 year old bourbon.
Finish: Short. Light oak dominates with an ever-so-slight touch of sweetness.
